Why the 'ö' in Boötis?

To indicate proper Greek pronunciation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boötes

Short version: it's not pronounced bootease, but rather boo-uh-tease.

Confusing for a Finn, and probably for Swedish and German people too...

I haven't seen a letter 'ö' in Greek alphabet (nor the other letters used). :joking:

It isn't a separate letter. It is a representation of a diaresis to show that in the Latin transliteration of the Greek original, the two o's are pronounced separately. The Greek original would have been Βοώτης except that as pointed out in another thread ancient Greek was written in all upper case with no diacritic markings.
