I wondered if you would post this one. The ability to reveal magnetic fields would seem to be very useful even if this particular technique can only be applied in a specific situation.
Are there any other energetic events that might be used to study magnetic fields either in or between galaxies?

AFAIK, no. The usual means of looking at magnetic fields is polarization methods, of course. Some such studies have been done.
