Astro Trivia Quiz for March

#1

Post by Raymondhow »

Greetings again TSSers, here's a new Trivia Quiz:
https://forms.gle/C7ejE2d1et9et3oz6

For the short answer questions, spelling does not matter. I will adjust scores for misspelled answers.
Remember:
1. No online research allowed, your own pure brain only!
2. On multiple choice questions, feel free to guess. You may get lucky!
3. If you have a comment about a question, please do NOT give away the correct answer.
4. Please do not repeat the quiz, at least not until after I announce the Champs sometime next week.

Enjoy!

I got 15/20, which is an improvement over last month's quiz. I guess it was a bit easier.

Answers, stats, comments…

1. In which constellation appears the clustery scene in the above image?
Perseus, 9/17 correct. The Double Cluster is one of my favorite outreach targets.

2. Which of Jupiter’s moons has hundreds of active volcanoes?
Io, 15/17 correct.  Io is squeezed by Jupiter tidal pressures.

3. Name the element which is the most abundant chemical substance in the universe.
Hydrogen, 17/17 correct. Said to make up about 73% of the visible universe.

4. Because Polaris is the North Star, its declination is exactly 90 degrees.
False, 15/17 correct. The declination is about 89.26 degrees.

5. About how many times per day does the International Space Station orbit the Earth?
15, 10/17 correct.

6. A “narrowband” filter will be most effective when viewing which of these objects?
Veil Nebula, 17/17 correct. Looks great in my Orion Ultrablock.

7. In the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, the black crystalline monolith was discovered near which lunar crater?
Tycho, 14/17 correct.

8. At 11 pm on a given night, you observe that Syrtis Major is exactly centered on the meridian of Mars. At what time should you observe the next night to see it centered the same way?
11:39 pm, 8/17 correct. The Martian day is about 39 minutes longer than ours.

9. Pick the correct order of stars by galactocentric distance, from least to greatest.
Antares, Sun, Rigel, 6/17 correct. Antares is closer to the galactic center than we are, and Rigel is the opposite direction.

10. Name the last moon of Uranus to be discovered before the flyby of the Voyager 2 space probe.
Miranda, 6/17 correct.  A rather strange looking moon in the Voyager images.

11. Which astronomer was credited with discovery of the above moon?
Gerard Kuiper, 6/17 correct.

12. Last month (Feb 2021) the rover Perseverance landed in which Martian crater?
Jezero, 10/17 correct. Must be a lot of tire tracks there by now.

See you next month!

Oops, I meant there were 17 responses. The 76 number was leftover from the local club and list.
