Re: Proposal - Live Virtual Star Party?
I would be interested, but time zones are going to be an issue on top of the logistics. Trying to organise clear skies on a particular day is not easy just in our one small island. I like the idea, a chat room may be a useful first step.
Cheers,
Tony.

Re: Proposal - Live Virtual Star Party?
It was great to see you at work with your setup Greg especially being able to control everything remotely and flawlessly while also keeping an eye on your gear with a camera. Sharpcap with live stacking seems the right tool for this. You set the bar pretty high for anyone taking part in this.
Now I am wondering if I need to invest in a Featherlite, autofocuser, mono camera with filter wheel and upgrade to a Pi4 for processing. I also thought about thatFR with 48 MM adapter (it would just make my ED127CF look more like my Mak-Newt so maybe not then). Altogether about $4000, hmm... let me first get to a level where I can flawlessly control my setup with plate solving, polar alignment and autoguiding (all part of Ekos, which is what I use) with my HEQ5 autoguider and DSLR , then I'll reconsider.
Your live stream was very motivating, thanks.

Yep, interesting, but the time differences are an issue. Between Santa Barbara and Nokia, about 10 hours and between London and Nokia about 2 hours. Not to mention Canberra (UTC + 11 hours).

Re: Proposal - Live Virtual Star Party?
What we are talking about doing is a LONG star party, say 24 hours. We don't expect everyone to stay on but the software would stay up and people could join in when ever they wish. Obviously weather comes into play, but if we did this once a month or so, at some point good weather should hit.
Again we are still throwing things out for discussion. Nothing set it concrete (nor will it be).

Re: Proposal - Live Virtual Star Party?
Tomorrow evening Tues. 02/02 is looking like decent weather here again. I'll probably be set up again and may go live. I'm thinking around 6:30-7pm PST (2:30-3:00 Wednesday, UTC )
If anyone here wants to join in I can do it via Zoom so we can talk in person real-time. Otherwise, I'll probably go via YouTube Live. You can still text chat live there.

Re: Proposal - Live Virtual Star Party?
I'd like to attend. Here the sky is totally cloudy most of the week, but there seems to be 24 hours of quite clear sky. Just a bit cool: -17C (1.5°F). ClearOutside shows all red. Meteoblue doesn't show that far, but as far as it shows, both seeing1 and seeing 2 are "1". Not very encouraging.
The night only lasts from about 7:15 PM to 6:00 AM.

Sorry I missed this. I do love SharpCap Live Stack for outreach. I've always been impressed at how good the LiveStacks look. Even though I do most of my capture with SGP these days, I still use Sharpcap LiveStack in "Folder" mode to get an idea of what I'm capturing and enjoy an early peek at the target.
Should be back home next weekend so hopefully can catch the next test run.

Re: Proposal - Live Virtual Star Party?
I just edited my post above. My UT time was off by 24hrs. It will be (2:30-3:00 Wednesday, UTC ) when I'm online. Tuesday evening here in Vegas.
If we go the Zoom route we will be limited to only 40 minutes if there are more than 3 participants. I forgot about that limitation with the free route. Maybe I'll look at other options that we've already discussed amongst the mods to see if we can get more people online for a test.

Re: Proposal - Live Virtual Star Party?
So rather than use Zoom which limits our time to 40 minutes if there are over 3 people in the meeting, I'm going to give Google Meets a try tonight. They have roughly the same limits but are offering up to 24hrs till March 31st. Don't worry, it will not last that long. I'll be online from around 7pm till around 9 or 10pm PST (3:00 Wednesday, UTC ) I realize this is going to be the wee hours of the morning for those on the other side of the pond but I'm just fooling around and testing different options for what I hope we can eventually do with a much larger group from all over the world. I'm hoping this link works later this evening. If not, I'll come back to this post and update it. https://meet.google.com/usj-hpck-wdy
The nice thing about Google Meets is that you don't need to download a separate program. I'm not sure if you need a Google account to enter the meeting or you only need one to create the meeting.

Re: Proposal - Live Virtual Star Party?
It was great!!!!
Had 4 people on Google Meeting and it works great. We are talking about using Jitsi next time to see if can do just a bit more of what Greg feels we need to launch it. Wish more people would join us. Next time I will post a notice on the portal and see if we can get more participation.

I got tied up and couldn't join the meeting. Looking forward to the next one, though. Jitsi seems to work as well as Zoom.

Sorry, I had just got up when I typed that, then I went to work!
That time slot will work better at the weekend.
What did we miss?
