I was wondering, do we calculate the magnification like for a telescope?

well I think I made my choice.
at apm they have a kit, 100mm with the fork mount and the berleback uni - 19 tripod.
I wonder which eyepiece I have to double.
I have delos 3.5 - 4.5 -6 - 10 and 17.5.
I'm going to do more planetary but also dso, like m42 and more.

I am a little disappointed.
I got a response from apm today, I asked
what magnification could be achieved with 100 mm binoculars.

100 sa = 70 x
100 ed , sd = 100 x
and for 600 euro more 180 x for the ed and the sd only .

and for 600 euro more 180 x for the ed and the sd only.
if I calculate the kit,
tripod, fork mount, binoculars and the 600 euros more for the magnification .
plus transport .

that's a nice total of $ 5,000 Canadian.

I was sure that we could have more magnification than that with binoculars .

With my 1200mm long telescope and a 90mm aperture mask I can easily get 200 mag on the Moon. Some nights way more than 200 magnification. On the same night with my 1000mm long telescope and 90mm aperture mask I can only get 166 mag. Perhaps others who have more experience than me will chime in and explain this. A binocular is a short focal length dual refractor telescope. As soon as I can afford it I will be buying a 90 degree 100mm aperture binocular for wide low power views. My 1200mm long refractor will team up with it for high mag views.

100mm binoculars or binocular telescope have the same power limit as 100mm telescope. For planets and Moon you could go up to 200x. For DSOs up to 100x. APM binocular telescope has F5 ratio, this means that to get 200x you need to use 2.5mm EPs like Vixen SLVs.

If you are looking mainly for high power views you could get 8" SCT + Baader binoviewer at half the price of the APM package. In theory it would give you up to 400x on Moon and planets. It will be also less expensive to assemble EP set for SCT setup, since even simple EPs work nicely in slow scopes like SCT. Fast APM binocular telescope will be more demanding in terms of EP quality.

Ditto, IMHO binoculars are not suitable for viewing planets, you need way more magnification. I would get an SCT with binoviewers instead. Portability is not necessary for planets because they are bright enough in polluted environments. For just the few nights per year when the seeing is good.

What impresses me mostly with my SkyMaster 20x80s is how well they work for DSOs. I can't see the rings of Saturn with them. If you get twice the magnification like you described you still can't see much. I would not want more magnification. What I would like for improvement is 90 degree viewing and less CA, and perhaps 100 mm instead of 80 mm. I would pay $1500 for that but $5K is a bit much.

BTW The best binos I ever looked through were Fujinons, I think they were 100 mm. This was at the RTMC, they had the best views of everything I looked through, just amazing.

this is exactly what i thought and was told too, but according to markus from apm.
we have to take into account the collimation of the binoculars .

it is not seen in my signature but I have a 120mm ed evostar.
the reason i want binoculars is for winter transportation here in canada.
easier to get out of binoculars than my telescope.
at least I think so.

Right, you have to take into account collimation.

Not sure it will be easier to transport 100mm binocular scope compared to 120mm frac. At least by weight it is twice heavier.

I've come to realize that trying to dissuade the average newbie from getting binos for planetary viewing is like telling a teen not to do something -- it tends to send them charging in even faster to do it. Then some weeks later they finally reach out to me after they've got the binoculars and a cheap B&H tripod. Usually they're asking for my help and complaining that something is wrong because they "can't find the planet".

I believe most of observers enjoying astronomy with binoculars have considered binocular telescopes. Advantages over regular binoculars include angled (45 or 90 deg) EP position, ability to change magnification using different EPs and less CA. Although there are ED binoculars with fixed EPs to.

The disadvantages are high prices, weight and magnification limit imposed by accuracy of collimation.

As Henk indicated the strength of binocular observing is in low to mid power DSOs views. Although, at 80-100x I would not hesitate to do some casual planetary observing. It will resolve some details to make it interesting.

Hi! What did you choose finally? Sorry, if I missed smth. I’m disappointed at the unreasonably high prices, is there any alternative?

Hello ,
I finally decided to let it go.
the prices are just too crazy.
can be used if the occasion arises.
