Hi all. I took this picture this afternoon before an expected rain shower. The Bird of Paradise plant belongs to the plant family Strelitziaceae and is native to South Africa. And it has been cultivated throughout the tropics and sub tropics, including Florida. So the next time that you think you see a colorful bird on a plant branch and upon closer look realize it is part of the plant, it is a Bird of Paradise blossom:

It's ballooning season...but not the hot air type! Arachnids are on the move. Nature is just amazing! Spiders weave webs into balloon shaped orbs that catch the breeze and float through the air. If you stand still outdoors for more than a few minutes, you start to grow cobwebs. Everything is covered in webs. This morning, we had our first heavy fog that made their handy work especially visible.

Hi all. Here is the latest on our sweet banana pepper plants. After giving away a dozen nice peppers and harvesting some for ourselves, here are the current plants with new peppers coming to fruition:

And here is just a part of our harvest after my wife used some for a delicious stuffed peppers supper. (a few of them are 10" long):

We are having a bumper crop this year.

Looks great. Sadly we aren't having a bumper crop: the local rats are enjoying our vege patch a bit too much this year!

Dean, I had/have a similar problem. Over summer, I left the stuff they don't eat, leeks, red onion, beans, tomato growing in the vege gardens. Moved the stuff they do eat, leafy greens, lettuce, spinach beet, brussels sprouts etc to large pots on my large rear deck. For some reason they don't touch them there.

Our rats like snow peas, sugar snap peas, beans and tomatoes, as well as avocados and oranges! They are native bush rats, so maybe they like a different diet to NSW country rats.

I have finally managed to exclude them from our deck using fine wire netting and ultrasonics: but before that they had even been eating from our cats' litter tray... (we use a soy-based litter that can be composted). So much for predator cats (see below!)...

Mine are native bush rats too. Cute as! I lost some tomatoes to them but I had such a bumper crop I couldn't eat them all so the rats were welcome to a few.

A Pandemonium Parrots
I alway have about 10-20 local native parrots hanging in my "hood." Lately it's increased to more like 50-100.

Three species:-
* Eastern Rosellas
* Red Rump Parrots
* Superb Parrots

Hi Dean,

Could be a sparrow, I didn't see it or shoot it when they were all standing on the front lawn looking for worms. It must have been hiding in the bushes. Looks like a sparrow but could be a minor. We have both here in large numbers.

Wow- that must be loud.

When we visited Australia 2.5 years ago, the Rainbow Lorikeets were everywhere up the east coast. Beautiful birds. But LOUD.

Loud schmoud. I love it. Beats the neighbours fighting I used to hear in the city. This poem by a famous Australian poet, Banjo Patterson, comes to mind.

CLANCY OF THE OVERFLOW - A.B. "Banjo" Paterson

I had written him a letter which I had, for want of better
