It was a lucky catch for sure--I've never seen such a localized rainbow.

Today's excitement was having a team of arborists come by for maintenance on some of the redwood trees on our lot. It was thrilling to watch them work.

There's so much great biology that is unique to these trees. The mature redwood forests are sparse in terms of species diversity, because of the dominance of the redwoods, yet paradoxically they have the highest biomass per acre on the planet, even more than the Amazon rainforest. It's because they have nooks and crannies that can hold tons of soil hundreds of feet up in the air. And unfortunately, one tree hovering over our house has a greenhouse's worth of growth on top. Upon inspection 100' up, the arborist determined that the top of the tree will have to come off. $$$

Here's the foreman working on some of the more diminutive growth. The tree on the left has a 22' circumference.

It must be pretty awesome to have trees like that in your back yard! Perhaps when the arborist removes some of the top of that close one you could build an observatory up there! It would be an interesting exercise to climb up to it in the dark... ;)
Telescopes: 12" f5 dob, Celestron CPC800, 150mmf5 Celestron achro, Tak TSA102, TV76, ETX125...
Binos: Steiner Wildlife XP 10x26, Swarovski 8x30 Habicht, Zeiss SFL 8x40, Vanguard Endeavour 10.5x45, Fuji FMTR-SX 10x50, Tak 22x60, Orion Resolux 15x70
Eyepieces: way too many (is that possible?), but I do like my TV 32mm plossl, 13mm Nagler T6, 27mm Panoptic and 3-6mm Nagler zoom, plus Fujiyama 18mm and 25mm orthos and Tak 7.5mm LE

Yes, I feel like I'm a steward of this little piece of property, we're very fortunate. I like the idea of an elevated observatory for the view, but my constitution leaves me queasy even on the roof, when I'm blowing off the duff from all those trees.

I spotted this beauty at the top of my bald cypress tree this morning after a walk. It’s a Red Shouldered Hawk.
I grabbed my dslr and got these somewhat poor shots from below. The hawk was in front of a bright overcast sky which made to really tough to distinguish details.
Thanks Photoshop for helping out!

Considering the bad lighting conditions, I´d say you managed really well!

Wow, those are really pretty! Thought I´d buy some for my wife to plant but they were sold out everywhere here in Sweden. Don´t know the regulations regarding importing plants and stuff :)

Thank you Martin.

We didn't actually buy those plants. They were a gift from a visiting bird, deposited in our garden border :D

Once established they seemed to flourish on their own.

I hope you manage to fond some for your lovely wife :icon-smile:

I envy the use of your drone Mark.

Here in the New Forest they are not allowed due to the disturbance of nature they would cause. Otherwise I could get some really fantastic views

Spotted this beautiful Barred Owl while walking a few days ago. I’ve often heard them early in the morning, but rarely see one.
Luckily, the bird remained while I went home quickly to get my dslr.
The photo was taken after sundown and the crop was huge!

Yeah. I have two big dogs that I walk and that keeps me pretty much tied up.
I’m going to start throwing the camera on my shoulder when my wife walks too. Just in case!
