What could cause this?
Hello,
I'm having this problem where the motor will monetarily stop working and then start again. When it stops it makes a grinding sound. Anyone else having this problem? What's happening.

Re: What could cause this?
If you turn the slew rate lower does it still make the sound?
It sounds like there are worn gear teeth or loose/ skipping gears inside.
If it is still under warranty send your video to Orion Tech Support, do not open it without their say our you could likely void your warranty.

Re: What could cause this?
Thanks for the reply.
Do you think a grossly unbalanced telescope could cause it?
I played with the mount for hours yesterday without the scope on it and could not reproduce the sound. I'm going to try today with the scope on it. I think it may be my fault for not balancing.
What would happen with a higher end mount if the scope was really out of balance?

Re: What could cause this?
the motor stalls , the sound is less of a grind noise but more of a clunk,clunk,clunk.. yours sounds like it's chirping pretty loud even for a motor stall. makes me think that's theres balance problem,or a tight spot on the worm wheel which is causing load on the steper motor gear reduction box if it has one .. too much clacking for a stepper to a gear cog to a worm .
it may even be just a bearing

Re: What could cause this?
Balance problems will certainly cause weird noises, erratic motor behaviour, and, ultimately, mount failure.
Always, always balance the rig. If you are in a desperate hurry, an approximate balance is better than none at all. But the stars aren't going anywhere. Take your time and get it right.

Re: What could cause this?
Definitely balance the telescope.
A 200mm newtonian is a lot of telescope for a Skyview Pro to carry in the first place.
Once you do get it balanced I would recommend turning the slew speed down a step or two just to be nice to the motors.

Re: What could cause this?
It seems both motors stop when this happens.
I have balanced the scope and it still is happening. It appears the damage is done.
I don't see any slew speed control, only tracking.

Re: What could cause this?
It seems that slewing speed is set higher than the motors mechanically can.
If the same problem occurs without telescope and counterweights it is obvious.
Can you set the parameters of the motors?
If not slewing should be done no longer than the time it takes for the motors to shudder. Than stop a second and restart slewing.

One of the buttons should have RATE on it. Press that and then a number between 1-9.bigfish wrote: ↑Sun Oct 18, 2020 7:58 pm It seems both motors stop when this happens.

9 is normally full speed, I would slow it down to 6-7 and check again.
This does not affect tracking speed only slew rate.
I do not use facebook so cannot read your link.

Re: What could cause this?
Yes that does change the rate when I do a manual slew but when I do the go to slew it doesn't seem to affect the speed. I'm talking to Orion tech support right now.

Re: What could cause this?
Oh no. I have an Svp 8 as well.
I’ve run into the same problem before. I’m thinking same as the posters before me.
Balance, tighten things up.
I would add watch the cables at all times when slewing, keeping one thumb above the “esc” button to prevent yanks and motor stress.
Keep speed down.
I hope yours isn’t too badly damaged.
Best wishes with ORION.

Re: What could cause this?
This would suggest some kind of an electrical problem/overheating with the controller. Are you running off batteries or a mains power source? Check for fluctuating voltages if you can.
This person seems to have a similar problem

Re: What could cause this?
I'm running it with a 12v 2.5a power source. Ive tried different power supplies with the same results.
Last month my hand controller and control box died. Orion replaced them and now it is making this noise.
I'm wondering now if the motors had anything to do with the controller box dying?
I think I discovered that it only makes this noise when both motors are working together.

Re: What could cause this?
Here is an update: Not Good.
After several emails to Orion, support sent me a newDec motor. I'm still have the same problem.
I think it's the new hand controller or motor control box they sent me when the original die. I have totally disassembled the mount, cleaned, painstakingly inspected the gears and greased it. The mount is working perfectly.
Has anyone ever seen this before? I've spent more time troubleshooting this problem than using the telescope.
Here is a video.
