Astro Trivia Quiz for August!

Okay guys, here's another quiz.
https://forms.gle/DhkDL5JMaNKyC9ULA

These questions are repeats from our club's 2018 annual dinner.
The first question was easy for them, might stump non-locals.

Remember:
1. No online research allowed, your own pure brain only!
2. The short answer questions are one word only. Spelling counts!
3. For the multiple choice questions, feel free to guess. You may get lucky!
4. Please, no repeating the quiz.. at least not until after I announce the Champs sometime next week.

Enjoy! :Astronomer1:

That didn't go well... 3/22, and I lost 3 points misspelling a name...

Still, it was enjoyable and worth some further research on my part. Maybe I'll learn something in time for next month's quiz ;)

Thanks again and all the best,

5/22. Didn’t go well for me either, but about my normal or maybe slightly better.

Man, that is some tough trivia!

Okay, one change: correct spelling is not necessary on the quiz. That's the way it was when I did the quiz on paper, and I’ve learned it’s quite easy to adjust scores in Google Forms.

So if you’re off by a letter or two, have faith that your final score will be adjusted upwards from the score shown by the auto-grader. If you have no faith and want to know your score, PM me and I will reveal all!

A poor poor four for me!

Some daft mistakes including spelling but mainly memory!

Crap! 4/22. If I'd taken more time and done some more head-scratching I could maybe have gotten another 3. One that I got right was a lucky guess. Tough one!

Yep, I did poorly too, 5 measly points. I felt terrible until I saw I was not alone :) I guess I rely a lot on looking up information rather than storing it these days. Great fun and awesome learning opportunity, thanks for doing this.

Very difficult quiz. Some real tricky ones in there... How is anyone supposed to remember the name of the lander on that comet?

There was a lot of outreach from [spoiler redacted] related to that mission, so it was very much in the public eye over here.

Oddly, I remembered that but couldn't remember the name of the orbiter that dropped it!

Thanks all for participating! Total of 17 TSS responses this month.

The 11 questions scored 22 points.
Overall average score: 7.12 points = 32.4%.

Yeah, I guess that quiz was pretty tough. Next month I promise to lighten up with all new questions, not a rerun..

First, the honorable mention:
One person scored 14 points = 64%
TSS
Bravo!

And now.. (drum roll please) here is your Champion!
One person scored 21 points = 95%
Lady Fraktor (Gabrielle)
Hurrah! Hurrah!

She missed only the first question, which would be tough for anyone not in my astro club. But her score beat the best of my club, which was 19 points.

Answers, stats, comments…

1. Of these three permanent telescopes at Chabot Observatory, which uses a large mirror to gather light? (1)
Nellie, 6/17 correct. An easier question for Bay Area folks, tougher for others..

2. An event known as an “asteroid occultation” occurs when an asteroid passes behind a star. (1)
False, 15/17 correct. An occultation is when the asteroid passes in front of the star.

3. Which of the following is the prototype of a class of variable stars that helps to calibrate distances to nearby galaxies? (1)
Delta Cephei, 13/17 correct. The prototype of the Cepheids, whose distances can be determined by relationship between luminosity and observed brightness.

4. Which of the following moons of Saturn is a “shepherd moon”, meaning it clears a gap in planetary ring material? (1)
Pan, 6/17 correct. In 2018 one of the EAS lectures at Chabot was by Jeff Cuzzi, who was involved with the Cassini probe to Saturn.

5. The gap in Saturn’s rings cleared by the above moon is named for which astronomer? (last name only) (1)
Encke, 3/17 correct. Many picked Cassini for his more famous division.

6. Which is the Bayer designation for the second brightest star in the constellation Canis Major? (1)
Epsilon, 3/17 correct, about magnitude 1.5. Of course most picked Beta. Come on, couldn’t make it that easy...

7. Of the following Pleiades stars, which is NOT one of the Seven Sisters? (1)
Pleione, 2/17 correct. She was the mother of the seven sisters. Their father was Atlas, appropriately enough the star right next to Pleione.

8. Name the first spacecraft to achieve orbit around a comet. (1)
Rosetta, 7/17 correct. The European probe caught up to comet 67P in 2014.

9. Name the lander module of the above spacecraft. (1)
Philae, 6/17 correct.

10. Which was the last moon of the Solar System to be discovered by direct visual observation, rather than photographically? (1)
Amalthea, 7/17 correct. Discovered visually in 1892 by E. E. Barnard.

11. Which is the closest known solitary white dwarf star? (1)
Van Maanen 2, 2/17 correct. 14.1 light years away. Barnard’s Star is closer and solitary, but is not a white dwarf. Sirius B is a closer white dwarf, but it’s not solitary.

12. Optional comments, disputes, praises, scorn.
"This is a tough one", "I really needed more coffee", "I guessed at most".

See ya next month!

Thanks for the quiz Ray. It was a tough one but tough is good! Not going to do the next one as soon as I get up!

Well done Gabby. Very impressive score.
