Yesterday it was quite warm, about 70F, the lizards were even out.

Today more rain, we must have about 4" of mud so far.

I don't really know what happened today, but there was a big yellow white ball in the sky and it lasted all day.

Even when the skies are clear, I can't see detail on anything because the jet stream has been camped out in my neighborhood for weeks now.

Oy. Is that what's going on? Transparency here (red zone) has been garbage the last two mornings. Can't even see Comet ZTF with binos or any of Lyra except Vega with the naked eye. I thought it was high stratus cloud or (ice) fog, but the weather service says no.

New weather alert says between 40 - 60 cm of snow over the next two days, currently heavy snow with about 75 metre visibility and high winds.
Drifting snow, snow accumulation, drifting snow and icing expected... It looks like a fun return to work tomorrow!
The average snowfall for the village is 1 metre, we have had that much just in January!

Happy Ground Hog Day! (US)

It's seriously my favourite holiday, I know I'm strange 😆

But it represents that more than 50% of winter weather is now behind us in many locations.

Yes, a lying self-centered rodent.

Let's eat him. I should check what Woodstock Willy saw - he's our local weather rodent (aside from the local tv weather team that is).

I understand that installation of solar panels also guarantees another 6 weeks of (dark, overcast) winter.

Here in south eastern Australia, we are experiencing a mid-summer, Antarctic blast. Overnight temps below 10C, daytime maxima in the high teens. The Snowy Mountains, about 200km south of here in Canberra got -2C overnight and snow down to 1500m.

Meanwhile, my brother in Brisbane 1000km north is sweltering through temperatures in the high 30's, humidity pushing 100%, dew points up to 25C.

Three years ago around this date we in Canberra, were shrouded in smoke and expiring in temperatures in the low 40's. Even the birds were suffering.

These cockatoos spent about 4 hrs lounging by the dish of water I laid out for them.

Eventually they moved off and the wattlebird moved in quickly and had a swim and drank and drank and drank.

Upper-60s, lower-70s over the next ten days, nights low-40s, mix of sun and clouds. Chance of rain Sunday after next.

The spate of incomprehensibly freezing weather continues here. I have yet to venture out for a single viewing of the sky this season, because it has rarely risen above 10°F after the sun sets for months now. Walking back to the car after meeting some people last night, I noticed an immensely luminous moon above. I stopped for maybe 30 seconds to gaze at it, but had to soon rush to the car to ward off the increasingly frigid feeling overcoming me. When I turned on the car, the outside thermometer read 2°F. I know it gets much colder than that (it was -10°F here just a few days ago), but I still don't want to linger outside for more than a few minutes in such conditions. Shockingly, the digital thermometer now reads 20°F. Perhaps hope does exist. Recently, double digit temperatures (the positive ones) of any kind seem miraculous.
