things that annoy
I thought that I would pose the question of what are the small (or big) irritating things that can and do go wrong in the DIY area? Murphy is, after all, an amateur astronomer.
I'll start with a couple of recent things;
1. trying to remove a lens (see thread) and finally getting some action with the Dremel Versatip. Then it stops working. Checked the inside and all connections seem there, but gas no longer flows as well. So have to chase up a new one. Remembering that we are rural, the local hardware store doesn't have any in stock, the nearest large town has one hardware store from a large chain and they don't stock any Dremel product and so, wanting to support local business I choose to order from the local hardware store. This will take another week for them to receive it. Meanwhile time marches on.
2. another idea was to have an 8" mirror coated for IR use. I found someone who could do the job, we exchanged a couple of emails, then after two more emails, there has been no response. Another couple of weeks down the rain. Now to find another coating service - preferably local within this country, but I wouldn't be surprised if the mirror has to take a trip to the US.
3. a simple thing, an optics test bench, so one would think. But it is now four weeks since I requested a simple quote from the local engineering company. I ring or drop in and keep getting the run around. What can be simpler than a sheet of steel with holes in it????? Each day the surplus bench ( Melles Griot) is looking more and more like a bargain at US$3000!
Fortunately, there are several other things on the go, so it is a matter of bringing them from the back burners and hopefully some small victory over commercial and industrial inertia can be hard fought for and won.
So, what might Murphy be doing in your neck of the woods?

Re: things that annoy
That's a big one. Happened to me last Saturday getting set up for a big star party. Fortunately I was able to drive to a nearby town and find an open market to get two new AA batteries for theGraeme1858 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 05, 2019 9:46 pm Perhaps not DIY but hugely annoying when you get setup and discover that you left the red spot finder on last time out and now the battery is flat!
I am fortunate in that the Cedar Hardware is a two-minute walk from my house, as every DIY home project requires three trips. And in my winter home, Brenda's ferreteria is a five-minute walk. Nice thing about both places is that you can buy just one or two of a bolt, washer, drill bit, etc, and do not need to get an entire bubble pack or complete set. I am spoiled.

Re: things that annoy
That is the worst. I discovered a dead battery again yesterday. I only got to use it once lol.Graeme1858 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 05, 2019 9:46 pm Perhaps not DIY but hugely annoying when you get setup and discover that you left the red spot finder on last time out and now the battery is flat!
I think I am going to wire in a battery lead so that I can run it off a larger cell(s).

Or how about when
Or - You get a free light pollution meter, use it one time and put it somewhere safe and then can't find it again? (I'm still searching 2 weeks later).
OK, I'm done for now...

Re: things that annoy
They're here, too. A few weeks ago I set a 6-40 tap down on the workbench. When I came back it was gone. A thorough search did not recover it. And I keep a clean shop; there are no piles of clutter for it to be hiding under, so I know that the shop fairy took it just to mess with my mind. And it was the only one of that thread I had so I had to order another.

This is my third motorcycle but is definitely my favorite.
I have a Ducati Monster 821, it just had its first track day a few days ago.
A lot of fun on and off of the track
