Question For 6" Achromatic Owners

#1

Post by Refractordude »

What 6" achromatic telescope do you own? How do you bring out the colors when observing globular clusters at high magnification? My thinking is that at high magnification the violet color of an achromatic would be a problem. Yes dark skies, but what about some type of filter? Perhaps a filter will ruined true colors of the cluster.

I have a Celestron 150mm f/8, the best thing for spotting the subtle shadings in a globular are very dark skies and well dark adapted eyes.
Some people see a warmer tones and some seem to see a cooler tone.
Some nice refractors, eyepieces, mounts and related equipment
The only culture I have is from yogurt

I own a f/5
I can't remember having seen colors with it in Globular clusters. not even in a 14 inch SCT.
CA is not visible for me in the f/5 on stars fainter than magnitude 4- 5. I have never been a champion in seeing colors, so I see no colors in globulars.
Sometimes some color in the Lucida of small open cluters, sometimes in extended open clusters. The red stars in the double Perseus cluster are a good example of the latter.

6” is too small an aperture to see colors in a globular cluster for me. Sometimes if the seeing is extremely fine I can get a pale hint of color in the 12”. To get really good color saturation needs 20-40” aperture to my eyes.

In my 6" achro I have not seen colors in globular clusters. I have noticed spectacular differences in color with open clusters, e.g., Beehive, M52, and the Double Cluster, among others. I believe the individual stars in globulars (magnitude 12.5 - 14 and fainter) are too faint to show coloration.

So with a 40" scope you get about an 11 magnitude gain and you can start to match the colors on bright stars that the unaided eye can see.
