Galaxy season: DSLR or CMOS?

#1

Post by Baskevo »

Hi everyone,

I had a quick question, that I know I have asked before, but I wanted to make it a thread to get more opinions on the matter.

With galaxy season approaching, I was wondering what would be better:
1) Using a cooled monochrome CMOS with LRGB
2) Using a cooled monochrome CMOS with RGB + LP filter (Optolong L-Enhance, or something of the sort) as a luminance filter
3) Canon T7i DSLR with a LP filter

I just saw a really great image of a galaxy shot from a bortle 8. It was with a Canon Mark II and an Optolong L-Enhance filter. That is what prompted me to ask this question. The amount of time needed on a target is not really a huge deal to me, since I'm practically automated and I am set up from 6pm to 6am on every clear night. The only thing that matters to me is quality.

And before anyone says "just go to a dark site," the closest dark site to me is a bortle 4, which is 2 - 3 hours away, so this question is specifically about the backyard...

Thank you everyone!
-James W.

have you looked into adding a ha filter as well?,some galaxy show really well in ha , you'll need to lrgb and then subtract the red data from the ha data.

i believe The same could be done with setups using 3nm filters as a 3nm ha filter cuts out nii and instead of buying a nii filter you could image a target in 3nm ha and 5nm ha then subtract to pull out the nii data.

http://www.aicccd.com/archive/aic2007/SchurAIC2007.pdf

i have some new filters on the way and i opted for a lp filter instead of a typical lum, apparently the lp filter gives a very slight blur and isn't as sharp as a clear lum filter, i don't know, but that's what i've been told and it's probably from the missing wavelengths the filter is removing , galaxies are made of many broadband wavelength stars with dust/nebula ectt.

i'll settle with a lp filter as it gives me a tiny bit more contrast despite the resolution , colour balance.

I don't realy image galaxies much, i'll post some images, you can see a cls works ok. some of my older work, the processing needs a little more work on the colour balance, but you can see there's still plenty of resolution. bortle 5-6

if you need a lp filter, you might be better of with something not as strong. really you could do it just as well with no filter, just sink in more time. a lp filter will just increase a tiny bit of contrast.

Okay James,

I'm going to call your bluff! If you drive north to Mt Pinos you'll have access to a Bortle 2 borderline Bortle 1 sky plus it is only 2hrs, 45 mins from you (if you live near Santa Ana). I'd drive that far for a Bortle 1 sky in a heart-beat. Two years ago it had an SQM-L reading of 21.77 taken by Don Pensack! BTW, the SQM scale only goes up to 22.00, so 21.77 is a very, very dark sky!

Okay, you're right... I was thinking of Anza, which is the OC Astronomers club's dark site, which is the one I would want to go to for my first time since I would have access to power, wifi, and not have to worry about wild animals lol And I do want to make it out there, it is just hard to find the time! I would only be able to go maybe once a month, tops. This question is more for the other days of the month :)

I'm just about ready for my first dark site visit though... I pretty much have everything all set up and running. It is scary though. What would I even do while I image for 4 or 5 hours? lol
