Re: Most powerful universe event ever
Thanks very much for the link.
However, I did not read anything about something occurring in our lifetime. Can you elaborate on this?

Of they see it in our telescopes it is reaching us now, that’s what I have been thought. Also it’s cool we are alive to see the most powerful universal event ever.

Re: Most powerful universe event ever
I did not see anything about this happening soon, this is an ongoing merger on the universal scale; a eye blink for the universe in general, millions of years for us.
A bit like the impending collision between the Milky Way and Andromeda, though I would not wait for the suspense to build.

Re: Most powerful universe event ever
Not sure what you mean, NASA is stating this is the most violent event ever that is happening in our universe to date, so if it is the most powerful to date then they are telling us it’s happening.
Also why are you stating we will not be around for it to happen if it is happening now?

Re: Most powerful universe event ever
I think you are misunderstanding the language used.
How long do you think it will take for this merger to complete? Or even actually get started?
If you are thinking of it happening tomorrow that is not the case. Think millions of years.

Re: Most powerful universe event ever
Let’s break it down then
1- is this the most powerful And violent event that will ever happen in the history of the universe as per NASA?
2- if NASA sees this happening is is not happening now? The light has reached us so therefore in progress.

Re: Most powerful universe event ever
Just because they can see it about to happen does not mean it has already happened.
We can see the light from Andromeda and know it is going to collide with the Milky Way but it has not happened yet.
Just because a object can have its track charted does not mean it has already collided.
They have been tracking these objects since 2004 as per the article so nothing new for news.
The article is from a newspaper with quality of the National Enquirer, why not check out some actual science based journals for relevent information about this ongoing event and get some actual facts?

That’s why I am here asking the questions above cause I do t understand
1- is this the most powerful And violent event that will ever happen in the history of the universe as per NASA?
2- if NASA sees this happening is is not happening now? The light has reached us so therefore in progress.
3- also it says that they already swung into eachother once so it started

The OP article is of course worthless rubbish and not news. This topic was first discussed on the Astrophysics board back in October 25, 2019.

Since Abell 1758 is 3 B lyr distant the collision is likely already over. We just haven't seen it yet.

Re: Most powerful universe event ever
I'm thinking it's so far away, it's likely over and done with. It's had 3 Billion years of collisional relaxation time.Lady Fraktor wrote: ↑Sat Feb 01, 2020 9:10 pm I think you are misunderstanding the language used.

As for "most powerful universe event ever".... There have been many big galaxy cluster collisions with many larger. There's also the biggest event of all, the Big Bang! This might be the largest one we can see now but.... Who cares? If JWST succeeds in coming on line we'll almost certainly see bigger more energetic mergers.
Why do folks feel the need to make sensationalistic crap up?

Re: Most powerful universe event ever
So how long before it reaches us.
Also I thought supernovas were powerful, so why is this event considered the most powerful event in the history of the universe.
That is my confusion, I thought that galaxy clusters have already merged in the past. Or is the one the first ever to do this.

It is not the most powerful event, this has been pointed out already.
The title of the article is just standard clickbait rubbish.
