Hi guys,

What does everyone use to process their images? I know photoshop is very popular but I've also heard it has become expensive. Are there any cheaper alternatives that work for astrophotography? Thanks,

Russ

I use PixInsight. Unlike Photoshop, which, I understand, is an annual subscription, PI is a one-time purchase. Its big advantage over PS is that it is designed specifically for processing astro images. It has processes for every image processing function you can imagine, and many that you can't imagine.

Star Tools is popular too.

I believe there a forum sponsor as well.

But yea I use Pixinsight. Be forewarned, it is a VERY steep learning curve and difficult to grasp let alone master :D

Hi Russ,

A lot of folks who don't want to pay the monthly subscription to photoshop or the expenditure of pixinsight typically go with GIMP, here's a link : https://www.gimp.org/

Hello Russ

I use Gimp, it's free and really good. (gimp.org) There are lots of youtube video tutorials and lots of experience on here.

And I use Startools because I won a copy on this forum!

Good luck

Regards

Graeme

I started out with PhotoShop a few years back. It is by subscription these days. I keep it because I use it for things in addition to astronomy.

Currently using StarTools. It is a very well thought out and executed program and I recommend it as a fine tool.

I did a trial of PI earlier this year, and was very impressed with its capabilities. I will probably get back into it down the road, just not right now.

Thanks all for the advice, I will check them out. I don't have any experience with editing photos so will probably be back with more questions when I get stuck! Russ.
