That is pretty amazing that they were able to reprogram around the bad chip. The news stories all talk about the light travel time, but that is just a matter of patiently waiting for a reply. The truly amazing thing is the bit rate. A few years ago, I thought I remembered reading that they were down to Teletype speeds. I expect they are probably down to half that now, maybe 50 bps. And the transmitter on the spacecraft has the power of a 25-watt light bulb.

Every time we communicate with the Voyager 1 the distance of the communicae is greater, like setting the distance record for human telecommunications with every phone home...
