5 April 2024 - this is only a drill

I have been watching the clouds all day, slowly but surely the had been thinning out. At 9 pm the clouds drifted off to the south and the stars that were visible were bright and steady. I rolled the ten inch out and moved it onto its platform and drug out all the equipment. I gave the mirrors a quick tweak and aligned the setting circle to the north star. Even with the cheap Orion reticle eyepiece Polaris looked amazing. For the first time in a while I had very good conditions. I ran back inside to grab my notebook and the better part of three fingers of Balvenie single malt scotch and went back out. I got myself situated and was getting ready to go after my first target when I noticed my skies had gone from 10 percent clouds to 99 percent clouds. I sat there for the next half hour sipping my shot and packed it in. In my head all I could think was this is only a drill. Guess I will try again tomorrow night.

I am quite fond of Balvenie, for me it is the perfect single malt.

I have done quite few of those drills myself, except here it involves packing the truck and driving for a couple of hours. Mother Nature always has the last word!

Well i am going to give it another shot tonight, only i am not messing around and am breaking out the 16 inch and the 4 inch frac. I am going to do a big and little night.
