I read the article: it still makes no sense to me! (...and I know what my wife would think of it. )

The whip is usually made a braided willow bark not sticks and they are fairly soft.
I am not sure who that article was written by but I grew up with this tradition and was never put in pain ever!
At most I would have been soaked from water but as I got older I kept water guns handy
