Just to continue the sunset/rise theme...

These were taken last night down the hill from our place. Taken on my iPhone in "TrueHDR" mode, a couple of minutes apart.

Dean,

You have probably heard of the dramatic decrease in numbers of sightings of Splendid Wrens in Australia. Well that's because they've all moved out of Sydney and taken up residence in my garden! I do have a couple of crested pigeons but otherwise, all natives, mostly honey eaters, some noisy miners and not an Indian Myna in site. All photos captured in my garden over the past couple of years. Most of the shrubbery in my garden are native plants-banksias etc. Gives the small birds plenty of cover from the feral cats and birds of prey.

Thanks for this Joe, and the great images.

We do get a wide range of species here in the 'burbs, but the only ones I have seen nesting in the back yard are the feral collared doves. I have never seen more than 54 of these at any one time (not nesting!!!) though... (the backyard is only around 200 sqm- so it was quite crowded!)

I have seen silvereyes, new-holland honey eaters (the most common visitor after the ferals), wattle birds, a sparrow hawk (she likes feral doves!), crested pigeons (they are native), eastern rosellas, rainbow and musk lorikeets, a white-faced heron, magpies, willy wagtails, ravens, yellow-tailed black cockatoos in the pines over the road, noisy miners, and even a tawny frogmouth and a boobook owl just over the fence. Not to mention the usual ferals such as spoggies, pigeons etc. No wrens though! :(

They all love the bird-bath out in our front garden, and I have got some nice pixies through the front window over the years.

We also get regular visits from grey-headed flying foxes to the Moreton-bay fig over the road, and I have spotted a micro-bat flitting in front of the moon (in fact one buzzed me just the other day). (Data from an anabat detector nearby shows 6 species of microbats in the area!) Apparently (according to some local fauna experts) we would be "knee-deep" in mosquitoes if it weren't for these little fellows.

I must admit though I am just a tiny bit jealous of your country block.

All the best,

Dean

Just for fun, here are a couple of images:

I love the water-cast of the magpie's head in this one:

A crazy rosella:

and a stately heron:

and here it (or its' cousin) is down at the local beach:

Drove out to the Bonneville Salt Flats a few days ago. Expected to see salt, but found the salt was covered in water! Not too surprising if I had thought about it a little. Lots of snow melt this time of year. Still a scenic drive and destination.
