Actually, the part of the disk around 10-11 o'clock looks a bit darker.

I certainly was as I wrote or at least adapted it. If you look carefully at the image looking south from my front yard, you can see a hint of a pink auroral band above the smoke layer. But it was clear I wasn't going to get anything more than a marginal display.
