FiINALLY!!! A clear slot for 12p Pons-Brooks!

#1

Post by hosshead »

So we have been pretty cloudy for a few days/nights, expected the same last night.
Imagine my joy to look out my window to see Arcturus' gorgeous orange winking at me through the treetops!
AND NO MOON!!!!

So.
I raced my Big Binocs and my Perfectly Portable c90 out to the Trusty Subaru, loaded them into the hatch and drove uphill to a neighbour field.
Because 12p isn't very high and my residence is kinda in a pit.

And there it was.
Just JUST at the edge of naked eye,(maybe, with gaze averted, maybe hopeful mirage, it's mag 6 afterall!),super visible to my glassware.
Yes, dirty snowball smudge but I could see some fuzziness trailing that I think might have been a wisp of tail. Or maybe a bit of cirrus. Or more hopefulness.

Tripod parked sturdily in the mud,(yes, The Barlow Killer Mud), I was able to observe for about 37 minutes before the clouds rolled across my view.
The c90 surely is worth its existence as a decent width of view, stability far superior to the Big Binocs, and it's Perfect Portability.
Mostly used my 25mm Super Plossl on it.

Heavy sigh ,(and maybe a Futile Fist), at the clouds, I repacked the Trusty Subaru and coasted back down the hill to home.
The dogs let me know that I completely messed up their Hockey Time... but the Habs blew it so Pons Brooks had my priorities straight.

Rainy for the next couple, glad I got out, thankyou NoMoonSky!

Thank You Arcturus!
Binoculars; Celestron Skymaster 18-40 X 80 zoom, Bushnell7-15 X 35 zoom, a couple of older single speed Bushnells that ride around in the car for weather spotting clarification
Scopes; Tiny little Mak-Cass Celestron c90 spotter scope that lets me count the moons of Jupiter and with which I can see Saturns rings in Mickey Mouse phase
Old Meade 1000mm f/11 that was missing the finder scope and ring so I rigged one onto the barrel using duct tape and a bit of cardboard and that actually works and I can count the moons of Jupiter with this one too.
Meade 6" reflector,(really elderly), found at a yard sale, the tube is a bucket of rust and corroded mirror but the mount and tripod will be recoverable so hooray for that.
Cameras; Mamiya medium format 645 with a couple of polaroid backs and a series of wide angle to 50mm lenses
Konica-Minolta 35mm,Sony alpha dslr's, up to the a900 full frame, mostly got them used because I don't have much money.

That was a great and even amusing read, thanks! Thankfully nothing else landed in the mud :D As for the Habs, I so yearn for the 70's...

All the best!

Gotta love the little C90!
I miss mine and may pick up another, if I recall correctly you can get close to 2 degrees with a focal reducer :)

Yes.
It's really worth having.
I have the older one from like 1856 and the newer blue tube model that you can still get NIB for reasonable on the Amazon even.
The optics on both are good, I would say that the newer one gives us more crisp and clear.
And I love how easy it is to just strap it into a backpack for taking it to more off road mud puddles where the sky is darker. 😁

It looks like we have a clearish night or two coming this weekend, so I will give it a shot then. My issue will be the trees that dominate the view to the west.
