When I lived in Canberra, I couldn't notice any difference in sky brightness during Earth hour and reports I've read from astronomers from other large cities are similar. This year it's on March 23, just 2 days before full moon.
I'll be interested to see how the Cumbria experiment works. At least they are doing it near new moon.

Thanks to gubbermint initiated blackouts we have our lights turned of daily. So most South Africans will probably scoff at the idea of turning the lights off on purpose!
When my zone is turned off I see no visible difference, might take a LOT more nieghbourhoods around me to have any impact.

We have a Governmental Group looking after light pollution in the UK but you don't hear from them much. Probably more the media's fault then theirs.
