AllSkEye All Sky camera capture program.

#1

Post by AstroBee »

I've just downloaded and purchased the Pro version of this program and set it up and used it last night for the very first time.
https://allskeye.com/
It's very, very powerful software (Windows ONLY) and I've barely scratched the surface of what it can do. Just to give you a quick idea of its capabilities, here's a quick list.

1. Works with most ASCOM cameras
2. Runs automatically and cleans up your harddrives on a regular schedule which you can define. As you can imaging, capturing FITS files continuously will eat up harddrive space.
3. Automatic MP4 timelapse creation at the end of your session. It processes the FITS to either JPG or PNG and then creates the MP4 from those images.
4. Automatic meteor detection. Still a work in progress as it will give false positives for airplanes and satellites.
5. Overlays such as Meridian location, Zenith, stars & planets, constellation makings. (I haven't got to this point yet...) I hear it will even connect to your computer and place a tickmark where your scope is pointing if you have the appropriate gear.

Here's a quick and dirty timelapse I created last night using the program and my ZWO678MC in my backyard. No fancy features added yet. I had it set up on a tripod next to my main rig while I was imaging so you can see a bit of my scope in the bottom of the frame. North/bottom, west/left. You will also see Jupiter rising over my house. I only ran it for about 3 hours.

So now, on top of the observatory build, I have a new project. Get a setup for an AllSkyCam.

Looks impressive Greg.

And we have the Leonids and the Geminids on the horizon.

I guess it's possible. I'm planning on installing a weather station in the observatory eventually. Maybe this cam can be used in that.

Thanks Greg,

I'm right in the middle of building my plexiglass box for my external all-sky cam for the Obsy. This software looks awesome.

Appreciate it,
I am so very impressed with its features. And Michael, the developer is very responsive to answering questions on his support forum. He even makes it super simple to export your log files so he can see what you set and then tell you what's wrong. I highly suggest watching the 4 tutorial videos on the Knowledge Base tab. There are so many tweaks you can do to the programming that it is a bit daunting at first. I recommend starting simple with all default settings and slowly tweaking to your needs from there.

That feature could be very handy and worth exploring for me. I spent enough years in software engineering that I don't want to spend time futzing with files and interfaces and yadda, yadda, yadda, so I've shied away from EAA / AP.

Only one Leonid from last night. Caught in between the clouds...
Image Image

At the time that I'm posting this, YouTube is still processing the video. So come back later if it's not available.
I made this TL 10fps to slow it down a bit in hopes the tons of meteors would be easier to see. Sadly, I only captured one after going through the individual PNG files this morning.
