This reminds me of the SF novel "Dragon's Egg" and its sequel, "Starquake", by Robert Forward. They involve aliens which are physically extremely unlike
anything on Earth, and which live on the surface of a neutron star. Highly recommended.

I think I read one of those many years ago. The Earthers called the neutron star dwellers "Moties" or something like that, I think.

They are called the Cheela. Moties were invented by Larry Niven in his novel "The Mote in God's Eye".
