Just acquired yesterday. As some folks know I collect ancient coins with astronomical (or solar in this case) themes.

Probus (276-282 A.D.)

AE Antoninianus, 3.9 grams

Ticinum Mint, Mark XXI

Obverse: Helmeted and Radiate bust of Probus left with right hand holding spear over shoulder. In left, shield depicting three rows of soldiers holding shields. VIRTVS PROBI AVG (English: The Valor of Emperor Probus)

Reverse: A radiate Sol standing left nude but for cloak, holding globe in left hand and right arm raised in acclamation. CONSERVAT AVG

(English: Sol the Preserver of the Emperor)

Reference: like RIC 351G, Note no examples from Wildwinds have a matching decorated shield. Click on photo to expand.

Awesome find Michael!

I really cannot appreciate what you have here, but I really appreciate it anyway!

I do not see a date stamped on either side. Any guess when this coin was minted?

Probably around 280 A.D. in Ticinum (now Pavia) on the Po river

Yup.

The figure of "Sol" was celebrated with a festival on December 25th called the feast of Soli Invicto. The Greeks had a similar god they called Helios, representing the sun. If you notice, Sol wears a radiate crown representing the sun's rays. Very similar to the one worn by Lady Liberty on Staten Island. That statue was modeled after the Colossus of Rhodes, a giant bronze statue of Helios with radiate crown which was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world until it was destroyed in an earthquake.
