Long Period Variable Chi Cygni on the way to maximum

#1

Post by pakarinen »

For those interested, Chi Cygni is about half way up to max brightness which should occur in July. I guestimated it to be around mag +8.5 this morning in my 72mm. Just for grins, I checked the AAVSO site and they list the latest observation with binos as +8.3, so I wasn't too far off.

You can generate a custom lightcurve on the AAVSO site, but for some reason, you have to enter "khi cyg" for the star name.

Looks like Chi is getting close to max as of this morning. It looked pretty comparable to 17 Cygni which is mag +4.99. Catch it now before it starts its slide back to oblivion (mag +14).

Pretty cool and now that Cygnus is getting higher in the sky it should be easier to observe.
