Annular Solar Eclipse - one year to plan

#1

Post by kt4hx »

There will be an annular solar eclipse in the western U.S., across the Yucatan Peninsula and into South America on October 14, 2023. See the below links for basic info:

https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/sol ... october-14

https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/eclipses/f ... ipse-2023/

https://www.greatamericaneclipse.com/october-14-2023

Also to remind of the total solar eclipse on April 24, 2024. Hopefully some of us will be able to witness both of these events in their full glory. Remember - safety first!

Reviving this old post by Alan.
Anyone planning on traveling to image the annular eclipse in October. Was planning on camping on some BLM land in Utah and curious if anyone wants to meet up?

I'm thinking the same thing, @AstroBee. I haven't picked a place, yet. I'm inclined towards somewhere in the west desert, but not fully decided.

I'm definitely going. To both eclipses, actually. My viewing site for October in Utah is going to be at a hiking trail head in Sevier, Utah, found here:
Viewing Location in October

The spot should be only a few hundred feet from the line of the eclipse. Should work out nicely.

I'm going to drive down the night before and stay in the larger, nearby town of Salina, UT at a hotel. Then going to get to the viewing site early the next morning, claim my spot, and wait. Eclipse should happen at about 10:30 AM for me.

I thought about doing an overnight camping trip in a more remote area, but I have to work Friday, and I'm so far to the North, I feel like I would be rushing things to try squeeze it all in, so I opted for the hotel route. Hope, the weather is going to cooperate. That's the only hiccup I can foresee.

I'd love to make the trip. I like Moab for the wide range of activities that you can do if you use it as a jumping off point. I have to see how close the path is to Moab...

My friend Xavier Jubier has a whole series of interactive Google Map layers. You can zoom in, click on a location and you'll get a full set of precise circumstances for that location.

I've been using that site to plan my trips! Just stumbled upon it via a Google search.

I've been using Xavier's maps since the 2012 annular eclipse that took a very similar path to this coming Oct. annual eclipse. I also used it for the 2017 total eclipse to determine my location for that eclipse.
Very helpful and detailed information.

I also use Eclipse Orchestrator software on my laptop with an external GPS sensor to give me extremely accurate timings. Unfortunately, it only controls Canon and Nikon cameras so not much use for the ZWO cameras but you can turn the audio on and it will call out the timings for every event based precisely on your location within the accuracy of the GPS which is about 15-20'. If you are shooting with a Canon or Nikon camera, I can't recommend this software more highly.
