SVBONY SV105 Surprised me for guiding

#1

Post by StarLord101 »

I'll state upfront, I have ZERO stake or benefit whatsoever with this product or company. ie: I am not benefitting directly or indirectly from this. Seems like it needed to be said with all the fake reviews and product boosting on the internet these days.

So, I needed a camera to do guiding for my avx. I really needed it to be on a budget. I had found the svbony SV105 for a relatively good price ($115 canadian for it and a 60mm guide scope). Although I kept seeing people stating that it wouldn't work or would not work well because of multiple factors, especially it's low exposure time being around 0.5 seconds. In short, decent intro planetary/solar system/lucky imaging camera, but not meant for guiding. I had even seen conflicting mentions from manufacturer. But an article saying it could be used this way combined with the particularly affordable price point made me decide to give it a shot. It exceeded my expectations. I was expecting to see maybe just the brightest stars and the faint hint of any others. In my tests last night, I was able to pickup a decent chunk of stars, even where you couldn't really make out any to the naked eye. So it may not be perfect, but I am thoroughly impressed so far. I'll keep testing and update.

Thanks for the report on this affordable piece of gear. I'm assuming you used (or are going to use) it with PHD2 to assess its accuracy.

Cheers

In what respect were you wondering how I did the guiding? Like what software/setup I used?

Correct! But I also have a variety of other software and tools I was going to play with to test it out further. Sadly, as soon as I got everything in place and had done testing to confirm it worked, I planned a proper imaging session at a darker sky, and got out there, setup, and my barely used avx hand controller suddenly decided it would no longer work lol. Backlight only. No signs of life or slew available on the mount and can't even detect anything connected to PC's. Spent the next month trouble shooting as I couldn't find my receipt to try and get a warranty coverage. Followed by fall and winter in Vancouver, BC, known for barely any clear nights. So sadly, I haven't even had the chance to properly fully test it, as the issue still isn't resolved. But I can tell you that it was detecting pretty well during testing. As the original post mentioned, you aren't going to get the performance of a super expensive guiding camera and scope setup. But it's really not a very big difference considering the significant cost savings.

What I'd really like to find out is if I can use it for plate solving or alignment with any of the tools out there

Been a a while, but that is exactly what i meant.
What is the setup you used for software.
I have a SV105 and a home-brew finderscope.
So i was looking for a "how to" with the software.

Well, one question coming up again. I connected my SV105 to my laptop and started PHD2, but PHD does not find the SV105.... So how did you fix that?
