Just wanted to say I’m glad I found this forum. Just getting started in Astrophotography and was looking for some basic info. Hope to be able to get some useful info. Other forums assume that everyone is an expert and knows all there is to know about the subject.
My equipment is an SvBony 503 80mm scope on a Skywatcher STAR ADVERTURER GTI. Also using a asi178 mc camera. I live in a bortle8,9 are just outside of New Orleans. Looking for to using the forum.

Yes I do, but not on a regular basis it’s a bortel 3-4. It’s about a 2 hr drive at a farm. Seems like the biggest problem I have is getting clear skies. “ Don’t we all?”

2 hr drive is not too bad. It takes me about the same to get to Bortle 3-4 in the desert. Your could still do Moon, Sun and planets from home, but for DSOs you should get to dark sky.

Hi Tinmouse8 and welcome to TSS I hear you on the skies; I'm not much better off. I agree with Bigzmey for sure, I'm a regular Sun/Moon AP type. Except for the likes of Orion, the Pleiades and on a good night Andromeda, I too have to drive off...

TSS is not like other forums, people here don't assume anything; we all started somewhere. Thanks to this forum I can actually say I kinda know what I'm doing now... Plus its got that nice family feel to it.

Where are you located? I’m in Long Beach, MS and deal with a Bortle 7 sky (Bortle 6 straight up).
I would suggest that you start at home just to see what you can do. You might be surprised. A lot of it depends on experience in acquisition and processing, but if you learn how to pull decent results out of your skies, you will be amazed and thrilled at Imaging under dark skies.
Just to know, though, I image in my backyard in Bortle 6-7 skies, and I am too lazy to go anywhere else, and probably never will!
