Orion SynScan Firmware Update Problems

#1

Post by BuddyM »

I've had and enjoyed my Orion 12" goto SkyQuest Dob (with SynScan 4) for a few years now, and have not had any problems until I updated the SynScan firmware yesterday (Saturday, 03/18/23). As of last night Southern nor Southwest sky brightest star alignment lists Sirius as an alignment star, but wants me to use Altair located at S160 degrees at around 8:00pm. Doesn't even list Sirius in the Named Star database.. Two-Star align equally out-to-lunch. Tried the Goto M42 and I get "Below Horizon" although I'm visually looking right at Orion. There are bunches more issues like these but the bottom line is that the data in the HC is now uselessly inaccurate. Rechecked all the pertinent Date/Time/Lat-Long Location setup info multiple times and finally tried going back to the firmware version that originally worked but to no avail. Any solutions or similar experiences?

Hi, Buddy. Welcome to TSS.

It certainly is behaving like it doesn't know your geographic location or timezone. Double-check for common "gotchas" like plus/minus sign on timezone and longitude, incorrect daylight saving time setting, etc.

If all else fails, contact the vendor for help and/or repair.

That was it! I mistakenly had the Longitude set to East. So many thanks!
