Has anyone made or boughten a dew shield for the 25-30 yr.old Celestron SS80, what they called a spotting scope ? It looks like a refractor with a very short shield.

I make dew shields for all my equipment from binos to large SCTs from 3mm or 5mm black EVA craft foam. I feel they do better job than those commercially available.

Basically, I wrap the foam sheet around the scope so it makes a slightly conical tube with wider end out. Then, mark where the ends overlay. Take it out end staple or use tape to fix the ends. It is hold on the OTA by friction.

Tonite I took it out for its first dso test run under less than ideal skies in my Bortle 4-5 backyard, seeing was listed as poor. I mounted it on my Porta II and using my Celestron Ultima Edge 24 and 15mm and my 9mm Morpheus eps and an Svbony UHC filter, all 1.25". The Orion Nebula and several of the double stars looked pretty good as did the Rosette Neb. stars but no nebula using the UHC filter, maybe the sky wasn't good enough although I have always had trouble with it. The 2 star clusters just off of Sirius were okay even though they were low in the south. A couple of the clusters in high Auriga were the same. Using those quality eps helped a lot. Stars were pinpoint across the full FOV. I can hardly wait for warmer nites, tonite was about 0 to -2° C with about 55-60% humidity. I have a feeling it will be another excellent compliment to my other refractors ! Under the conditions this little scope really surprised me in its performance.
