Comet Panstarrs is currently nestled in the deep south near the Small Magellanic Cloud. It is a huge comet estimated to be between 30-160km diameter. It is thought to have originated in the Oort Cloud and was discovered in 2017 when still 2.4 billion km (16 Earth-Sun distances) from Earth.
Although it is huge, a planet killer were it on a collision course with our planet, most comets are only 1-10km, it is not bright because it does not get very close to the Sun or Earth. It's closest approach to the Sun is 1.8 Earth-Sun distances, about 300 million km. It is on a long slow fade. And will roughly lose one magnitude every 3 months this year. It's coma is thought to be almost as big as Jupiter.
