Svbony 7-21

#1

Post by Frazman »

A bit of our viewing here is accomplished by trekking in on foot to remote spots. With that in mind, we try to keep things light (hence the recent AT72 ED purchase). I have always hated carrying and having to switch out ep’s on our nocturnal walks.
I know the Baader variable is a pretty decent piece, but it is heavier than the Svbony. It is also more than double the price, another concern for me as there is always a chance of damaging or losing something in the “wilds” (lol).

I am trying to figure out if the Baader is so much better that the risk is worth the reward or would the Svbony be worth the views or just totally lacking in performance.

Would love to hear your thoughts?
Thanks

I have a celestron 8-24 it's OK and great for travel with say a small SCT or Mak which are very slow scopes so can handle inferior eyepieces , your AT72 is a fast scope so needs the best one can get , before that I had a seben 7-21 terrible plastic lenses , but have not tried the Svbony one
Reflectors GSO 200 Dobs
Refractors None
SCT C5 on a SLT mount
Mak 150 Bosma on a EQ5

Is the Baader that much better? Yes. Optical quality, coatings, build quality are much better.
For nocturnal walks if something happens to the SVBony it will not be as much of a loss.

I bought MrsG the 7-21 for her birthday a couple of years ago for use with her Heritage 130p (she get's all the things I think she'd love to share (!))
It seems to have recently migrated to the case used for the 72mm Refractor, so I don't necessarily need to remember the Eyepiece box.

It's not disappointed, light and easy to use offering good performance (by my limited experience) up to the shorter focal lengths, higher power.

I use it to look at the sun, I know it's not the same visual day night, but I'm very satisfied.
As for the Baader, he is in a class apart, I had the chance to look at Jupiter.
quite sublime as a view.
I did not want to spend this amount for solar visuals.

I had 3 Svbony zooms and a Mark IV, I got rid of the Baader and happily kept the other 3. They each are 1/3 the price for a bit less TFOV, they are zooms and work like zooms, we have to keep it in mind. And the build quality is as good as the BHZ.

There is a lot of competition in Zooms:

Check out the Svbony 7.2-21.6 zoom it has a lot wider FOV, yet still an excellent price. And no plastic !
