PEC Training EQ6 using EQMOD

#1

Post by starfield »

Just found this nice video on setting up AutoPec using EQMod. For EQ6 mounts or similar supported mounts, it also explains how to permanently store the PEC curve in the mount. Much easier than using the hand controler.

Finally had the time to watch this. Very good information talking about aggressive in the RA and Dec adjustment percentages as well as a better understanding of PEC. When I first read about PEC in the EQ6-R's manual, it talked about sitting at the scope with the HC and trying to keep a star in center of the EP. kind of put me off since I seemed to be getting good data. Looking at some old guide logs, the EQ6 looks to give me about .6 to .7 total RMS error while the AZ-EQ5 RMS is constantly 1 or higher but then I looked at my last calibration, it's no wonder. Nice trick is that you can image while EQ Mod is learning the curve, so no real time lost if you're doing some short exposure imaging. Next clear sky without the Mistress of the Night glaring down at me! :)

Well worth the watch if you are wondering about PEC and improving your images.

Clear Skies,
Chris

Excellent video on using EQMod. I learned a lot from this one video........What is PEC? How do I improve my guiding using PEC? It was not complicated as I thought it would be.

Probably a bit late but if you use phd2 just run the ppec algorithm no need for pec training as phd2 will adjust for the fluctuations after a few cycles , info in the phd2 manual.

It's worth the time, you can run an imaging plan while it's doing the training, so you don't lose any imaging time. My AZ-EQ5 total RMS went from .4 to .1 on a good night, I did also turn off the encoders. The EQ6 went from .7 to .4 on a good night. What I really liked about the video is that it talked about combining multiple training sessions into one average.

Clear Skies,
Chris

ohh does the newer eq6 model have dual encoders ?

I haven't seen a Skywatcher EQ6-R with encoders, the AZ-EQ6 does. I turned off the encoders on the AZ-EQ5 on a recommendation for EQ Mod.
