m44 beehive cluster 1 minute exposure. 80mm F4

Post by realflow100 »

taken with ST80 telescope with 0.8 reducer flattener F4 focal ratio. different telescope body 2-inch focuser
canon SL1/100D DSLR
Stack of about 44 frames or so of 2-second exposures. roughly a minute or so exposure time. just one minute.
atmosphere is bad. bad seeing turbulence. Slight clouds too. bortle 7-8
not happy with the trails from periodic error I can't seem to fix no matter what I do.

Wow, that 0.8 reducer flattener F4, really brings out a nice field of stars! :)

I agree with Yelm - That reducer flattener really helps with the stars, especially the ones towards the corners of the FOV. I started with an ST80 and my stars never looked nearly as good as yours!

You don't mention what mount you are using.

I had to use 2 second length exposures just to get round-ish stars. They are still slightly eggshaped. I can't decrease the exposure enough to get completely sharp stars. without having to take exponentially more and more very short exposure photos.
the periodic error could only be fixed with a periodic error correction curve applied with a guidescope. and even then its so jerky and unstable it still might have issues!

I found an easy-ish eay to attach the ST80 lens cell directly onto the end of the telescope tube of my SV503 70mm F6 ED telescope tube barrel with the 70mm lens cell unscrewed.

although judging by the stars on the left side of the image being a little more bloated looking. I think there may be some tilt or coma that I don't quite see. probably more likely tilt in some way. I'm not sure where its coming from. rotating the lens around doesnt seem to really change the direction. so its possible I have some sensor tilt or something else is not sitting right
Heres an example. Take a look across the frame. (Single frame of a comet. 5 seconds exposure length iso 800)
Image

If I use my regular non-reducing flattener I can get razor pin-prick point sharp stars from the center to the edges. So its possible the way I'm using the reducer is causing tilt. or the way I have it attached or something.
