Outreach opportunity

On Christmas Eve the Moon, Venus and Mercury were enjoyed from my driveway by several neighbors, one family having recently moved next door.

On Christmas night the new folks came over to my backyard for their first telescopic view of the Moon, Saturn and Jupiter (they had to depart without a look at Mars, alas).

You can imagine their reactions, and perhaps they'll now have a deeper appreciation for the night sky.

For various reasons, I have not done any outreach for a while. In fact, I don't do much visual these days, Something I may do more of next year. I have often done impromptu outreach worldwide, such as showing a lunar eclipse to about 20 of my in-laws in Chile. I have often observed from hotel roofs at various places in the world. Once, in Buenos Aries, I found that the door to the roof was locked and there were too many tall buildings to observe from street level, so I had to ask for permission. They had one condition: they wanted to look through my telescope! Conditions weren't great but I was able to show them the Moon and Alpha Centauri as a double star. We also had a look around the Southern Cross.

I might be doing some moon viewing at work while the evenings start early.
