It must be pretty awesome to have trees like that in your back yard! Perhaps when the arborist removes some of the top of that close one you could build an observatory up there! It would be an interesting exercise to climb up to it in the dark...DEnc wrote: ↑Tue Dec 06, 2022 12:53 am Today's excitement was having a team of arborists come by for maintenance on some of the redwood trees on our lot. It was thrilling to watch them work.
There's so much great biology that is unique to these trees. The mature redwood forests are sparse in terms of species diversity, because of the dominance of the redwoods, yet paradoxically they have the highest biomass per acre on the planet, even more than the Amazon rainforest. It's because they have nooks and crannies that can hold tons of soil hundreds of feet up in the air. And unfortunately, one tree hovering over our house has a greenhouse's worth of growth on top. Upon inspection 100' up, the arborist determined that the top of the tree will have to come off. $$$
Here's the foreman working on some of the more diminutive growth. The tree on the left has a 22' circumference.

Yes, I feel like I'm a steward of this little piece of property, we're very fortunate. I like the idea of an elevated observatory for the view, but my constitution leaves me queasy even on the roof, when I'm blowing off the duff from all those trees.
Considering the bad lighting conditions, I´d say you managed really well!Juno16 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 06, 2022 1:56 am I spotted this beauty at the top of my bald cypress tree this morning after a walk. It’s a Red Shouldered Hawk.
I grabbed my dslr and got these somewhat poor shots from below. The hawk was in front of a bright overcast sky which made to really tough to distinguish details.
Thanks Photoshop for helping out!

Wow, those are really pretty! Thought I´d buy some for my wife to plant but they were sold out everywhere here in Sweden. Don´t know the regulations regarding importing plants and stuffButterfly Maiden wrote: ↑Fri Oct 28, 2022 12:26 pm I posted a photo here on 3 November 2021 of a beautiful pink flower called "Nerine-bowdenii"- Nerine-bowdenii

Here in the New Forest they are not allowed due to the disturbance of nature they would cause. Otherwise I could get some really fantastic views
