JWST unveils the chemical make-up of an exoplanet.
The analysis and results were a surprise because their predictions of the chemical composition for WASP-39b included sulfur, which was expected to be locked up in hydrogen sulphide. But, the JWST results also showed sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere, suggesting that photochemistry may be responsible. Photochemistry is where high-energy photons interact with water molecules in the atmosphere creating the photodissociation of water. This photodissociation liberates hydroxide and atomic hydrogen. The next steps are where the liberated hydrogen and hydroxide react with hydrogen sulfide to produce sulfur dioxide. Photochemistry is essential to processes on earth which are key to life. The data is excellent and paves the way for further insight into planetary evolution from disk dust. It also provides deeper insights into atmospheric chemical processes on cooler exoplanets where photochemistry may be an important contributing factor for life. I'm looking forward to the analysis of data from the Trappist-1 system.
