For the last month, the weekends have been good for me to do some solar viewing. This morning it was sunny and warm. Later in the morning I received my Optolong UV/IR cut filter and was looking forward to trying it out. It wasn't even a half hour later when the clouds rolled in, the wind kicked up and it looks like rain. Now, come on, I know that always happens when you get new gear but it was just a filter!

I have similar problems. I have two quick "grab and go" methods and only do full telescope shots at weekends.

I use filters on 15x70 binoculars to view sunspots and a filter on my DSLR at 300mm focal length. For details, see my blog.

These methods are also useful for gaps in the cloud at weekends.

Gabby, that’s a great idea. And, has a good chance of success. But, I’d be scared that I might start relying on the sacrifice method and that might not be a good habit to get used to!

I have had to resort to the practice in the past, luckily I had many cheap Meade MA eyepieces on hand and truth be told, it was much more satisfying to bash them with a large mallet than to just throw them in with the recycling.

You had success for sure. The guaranteed enjoyment from bashing the eyepieces and if the sky clears too, an added bonus. Either way, certain satisfaction!
