Options for case foam

#1

Post by Chich »

I have to make new foam inserts for some cases. Before spending a schwack of money on some Kaizen foam does anyone have any other suggestions? or material to avoid?

I do have a few packages of those Anti-Fatigue interlocking foam tiles which never got used. They are easy to cut about 1.3cm thick and will hold items securly. Might give them a try unless anyone might have a reason why not.

Thanks for any input.

I feel that the foam which typically comes with cases is too soft to offer optimal protection. It also looses shape easily and starts to shed pieces with time. I am migrating my cases to black polyethylene foam which is more firm and resistant to shedding. However, if you have a surplus of the foam tiles, I don't see any reason not to use them.

The foam tiles should work well, just avoid upholstery foam as it continues to outgas for a very long time.
I have made small eyepiece holder trays from closed cell foam similar to roll up excersize mats.

I use leftover packing foam sheets. You could try extruded foam insulation - comes in pink, blue, or green panels. My pluck foam just comes apart after awhile. That black poly that Bigz mentions is supposed to be good stuff.

I used some carpet padding from the local big box store. It's been in there for years and is still good. Ugly, but it works.

I did this for my Lunt 80mm Ha scope about 6-7 years ago and it's held up perfectly. Still looks new. Pricey though.

This is an older post, just thought I'd give a suggestion...
.
Black velvet is what I used to COVER the foam inside my Aviation Headset Case.
.
You might have to trim/slim your existing foam for fit...(Soldering Iron is perfect for shaping)
.
I'd use a contact cement to put the fabric on...
.
No new foam... Just sealed from wear.

There are many colors of Velvet.
.
Gotta Fly...
.
PS Maybe "Felt"... it's wool
.
I was up ALL night , then it dawned on me...

.
After "It's wool" , I was going to say it would WICK away moister...
.
But for some reason... there is no pencil here... YES... We have no pencil
.
Gotta Fly...
.
PS Why does it SKIP Mercury... and go to Mars ?
.
(Oh , the pencil is there NOW on this post... must be a time limit ?)
I was up ALL night , then it dawned on me...

There is a time limit of around 20-30 minutes after you have posted where you can edit the post.

Once edited, a message appears at the bottom to show it has been edited.

After that time limit you just have to start a new post to add to, or qualify, your original entry.

Thanks for explaining that... it's the first time I've came across it.

I've had to edit a few post ... must have been within that time.

So why DOES it skip Mercury ?
