New StarAdventurer GTI PROBLEMS HELP please

#1

Post by BrooseK »

Hello All and thank you for being here :)

I just received a new Star Adventurer GTI to try some " easy " small lens astrophoto fun
I've followed instructions and assembled per the instructions
PROBLEM... no matter how I thread the counterweight shaft into the " regular latitude " position the shaft wobbles during rotation of the DEC axis.
I've tried this weight shaft with the collar on and with the collar off... it makes no difference, the weight shaft WOBBLES during b dec axis rotation
I tried a shorter shaft from my RST 135 E ( same threads to attach ) SAME PROBLEM, shaft wobbles
Needless to say this is rather annoying.
ANYONE have this issue ? SOLUTION ?
ANOTHER PROBLEM.... depending on payload balance point, and your latitude, the counterweight can and will hit the altitude adjustment knob on mount
ANY IDEAS on this ?
Thank you.
Bruce

First off, welcome to TSS!

I don't have your mount so I'm going by the instructions sheet from the manufacturer. It appears there are two locations to attach the counterweight shaft (a high latitude and a low latitude position) see the reference on page 6 of the instructions. Change the location of the shaft to the upper location and the weight should clear the knob.

As far as the shaft being loose, make sure the counterweight collar is tight before you install the shaft.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Gordon,

Appreciate the info, the issues is, no matter how I thread in-install weight shaft w/wout collar, the shaft rotation is not concentric this is into the " lower latitiude " section
either poor thread on shaft, poor threading on dec axle shaft, or bearing problem in dec axle

In the higher latitiude thread in, there is no rotation of the weight shaft..it is fixed... but clearly puts the weight farther off center, which is not what I want.

Cheers,

Bruce

You could try a wrap or two of teflon tape on the counterweight shaft threads.
It should help fill any extra room though likely not permanently.

BUT if this is new and/ or under warranty still, contact Skywatcher and get it returned for repair or replacement.

Thanks for the input Lady Fractor, I actually did try the teflon tape trick, remembered from my old plumber days.

Did not help, yea this one is going back to the vendor I bought it from, quite dissapointing I will add.

Having to send new equipment back is always unfortunate but at least you should get something back that works properly for you.
Good luck getting it resolved quickly.

Please don't forget to post a "First Light" report once you have the new mount up and running.

Also, it would be nice if you would stop by the Welcome Introductions forum and tell us a short bit about yourself and what you'd like to accomplish or what do you like to do.

I contacted SkyWatcher and vendor i purchased from in USA
Skywacther asked me to send video, I did yesterday
so far...crickets
in this techno gratify now society, a whole day with no communication is concerning
I bought this as a toy to play with while my RST 135 E Rainbow mounts does its thing with my Takahashi FCT 100
we may never know..if I don;t hear back tomorrow, that will be the end of my foray into Star adventurer

Hopefully a good resolution is coming though it may take 2-3 days to get a response.

It's been more than 48 hours with no response from Skywatcher
the vendor I purchased from will accept return, told me there won;t be any replacem, ents for this until April 2023

The failure to communicate is disconcerting, all the best.

Sad to hear there was no resolution yet.
Hopefully the retailer will make it right.
