NGC 7023 The Iris Nebula

#1

Post by Juno16 »

Hello all,

Another capture/process from my five night spree last week.
I feel rich to have collected 3 datasets in a week after 4 months of bad skies!

Skywatcher HEQ5 (Rowan mod)
Sharpstar 61 EDPHII w/ 0.8FR/FF (275mm fl)
ASI533 MC-Pro with ZWO UV/IR cut filter
Captured with N.I.N.A., PHD2, and GreenSwampServer
Processed with Pixinsight (2x drizzle)
623 sixty second lights over two nights (~11.5 hours)

First image with the new ZWO UV/IR cut filter. I really like this filter so far. I kept getting color fringing on the bright stars with my Sybony UV/IR cut filter and I kept going back to my IDAS LPS D-1 light pollution filter. I really like imaging broadband targets with only a UV/IR filter. I was hopeful that this new filter would work well and I am happy with it so far.

My goal was to capture some nice subtle dustiness in the background with a bright blue Iris was my goal.

I have never experimented with trying to bring out the background dust since I rarely collect it.
I prefer images that are not overwhelmed by background dust, so this works for me.

Hope that you like it! Comments are very welcome!

That's an exceptional image - love the colour and internal detail of the Iris itself.

That's a pretty one Jim. The beautiful blue of the Iris and the nice job of bringing out the surrounding dust. Well done.

Thanks Steve!

This dataset was just nice. I had lots of room to move around during processing.

My sky sweet spot is the north. Most of my western sky is obscured by trees and the east is blown out from the city lp and streetlights.
I'm imaging M31 right now. Big difference pointing the scope more east. The mean adu is dropping every frame!

Great job bringing out the Iris internal structure while still keeping the dust present and impactful. A well balanced image of the area!

Bob

I appreciated your nice comments Bob!

I have been extremely fortunate to have just finished my seventh night of imaging since 9/14/22. I don’t think that
I have ever had that kind of a run of clear skies. There were a few cloudy days, but not many!
This is after almost four months of poor skies. Man, weather is fickle!

It’s supposed to cloud up today, and with Ian to be in the gulf soon, who knows!

Take care and thanks Bob.

Thanks David. I’m enjoying the ZWO uv/ir cut filter for broadband targets even in Bortle 7 skies.

Hi Steve and thank you!

I tried something a bit different with the stars this process.
Of course, I drizzled, but I also did something that you and everyone else has probably been doing for some time. I removed the stars in the linear phase and stretched the starless and star’s image separately in HistogramTransformation.

When the image is just about done, I run Bill's star reduction Method 3.

Thank you for the nice comments!

Yeah, I was just getting to say the same thing. Nice detail in the dust closest to the bright nebula.
