Low price dew heaters

#1

Post by DeanD »

Hi Folks,
I just grabbed a couple of "Dew Heater Strips", with a 3-speed ;) controller and a strap on heater for up to 110mm diameter telescopes at a very good price: see https://www.amazon.com.au/Heating-Teles ... 9290&psc=1
I haven't used them yet (it is raining outside of course), but I will give them a good work out when I go on an astro camp in a couple of weeks. I figured at that price I couldn't go wrong- (I just saw the exact same ones on another local site for 5 x the price!).
I haven't worried about dew heaters before because usually it hasn't been a problem; but on the last couple of camps it was a pain.
Fingers crossed.

- Dean

Interesting Dean, hopefully they work well for you.

My only thought is that with only the 3 position switch the lens will end up being to cool or to warm.
Have fun at the astro camp! :)

Had a look and one of the comments said they bought one for their hummingbird feeder last winter. Might pick up two. Thanks for the link.

No hummingbirds around here! :(

However, last year I used a similar controller (from an electronics store) that I connected to a heating strip which I put into an eyepiece box that I was commissioned to make. Worked beautifully.

Thanks Gabby.

The instructions that come with it indicate it should be OK from around 0° to 20°C. Generally I haven't needed one at our campsite as the air is usually pretty dry: but they have had a bit of rain in the last couple of years so we have had an unusual amount of dew. Worth a try anyway!
