He apologized. In my opinion, he shouldn't have had to apologize, nor do I think he should have apologized. It was a tweet, for goodness sakes. I wonder if a better response to the complaints about his humorous post would have been something like this:

Today I discovered when an astronomer starts to become old.

You see a piece of desirable gear and the first thought after the initial excitement is not "Is there room in the budget?" but rather "Can my heirs handle that much astro stuff?"
