Congrats, you will enjoy it. Have had an ED80 for quite a few years now, and it delivers. I upgraded my focuser, only because I was hanging AP kit from the back. Stock focuser was fine for visual.

Nice scope Jeff. I have owned one since 2005. The focuser is ok for visual but not great. Adjust the Crayford tension carefully. If you’re planning photography you will need to upgrade the focuser. The scope works fine with 1.25” eyepieces but put a 30-31mm 80 degree eyepieces and you get a beautiful 4 degree true field. Now you’re in trouble. Enjoy. Joe

That would be nice, I seriously had no idea how long a cloud curse was for an ED scope.

Well the clouds burned off and was able to do a little white light solar.

Nice clear images of 3059, 65, 64, 62, 63.

It's going to take some time using the Crayford near zenith though, the tube just wants to slide down, it's a real fine adjustment to get it to work.
Fortunately, I don't observe too much at zenith at night, so it should be fine for my use.

Workaround for the focuser.
Lock the Cray just inside focus while looking at a low altitude target.
Then when on target slide the eyepiece out of the diagonal a little to focus.
If you want to change eyepieces and they are not parfocal, then you are going to have some fun.

I tried one of the rubbery heat shrink tubes around the focus shaft to improve friction but although it stopped slippage, it made the focus travel jumpy.

The GSO 96mm replacement focuser is no Feathertouch or Moonlight but it works much better than the original and makes the scope much more usable.
