NGC 891, Abell 347 Galaxy Cluster

#1

Post by jthommes »

Full image can be accessed from the link below. NGC 891 [SA(s)b? edge-on] is an attractive and popular target in itself, but about 46 minutes to the southeast (lower left of full image) is Abell 347 galaxy cluster [ACO 347]. Together these targets make a nice composition in a medium/narrow field.

NGC 891 is about 34 million light years distant while ACO 347 cluster center is about 240 million light years distant. Simbad lists the cluster with 57 members - brightest is NGC 910. The annotated image shows the core area of the cluster whose full extent is quite a bit larger.

There are many background galaxies and Quasars in this field as well. They are best seen in the full resolution image or the annotated image. The most distant Quasar visible in this image field has a redshift of 2.270 and a lookback of about 10.8 billion light years.

Image and details can be accessed at the link below (or by clicking on the NGC 891 crop below). The annotated image has a link below but it can also be accessed from the main image webpage as well. The full FOV image can be accessed from the image webpage and has an image scale of about 1.30 arcsec/pixel.

Thanks Jim for another lovely image and for all the work you put into your posts. I've seen the galaxy many times, but, never realized there was the large galaxy cluster close by. Your annotated images always help to put things in perspective. Beautiful image.

I think Steve summed up it nicely...

I was surprised to see how many galaxies are clearly imaged in this capture.

Did you used to work with the guys managing the Hubble Space Telescope?

Thanks BABO, Steve, and others,
Yes, I find that sometimes the wider fields offer great context. What is really nice nowadays is that optics and sensors allow taking wider fields without taking large compromises on image scale. In this case, NGC891 isn't too compromised by a 1.30 arc sec per pixel.

Ah no, I did not work the Hubble. It would be cool though wouldn't it. The next best thing I see though is a lot of people doing their own processing on some of the vast Hubble data archives.

Thanks for the comment Dan. I can tell NGC891 is one of your favorites (based on your avatar image). My thumbnail crop and your avatar image are about as close as you can get.
