Probably better odds of Fritz and I winning the lottery on a combined ticket than there is of this project detecting ET.

Yes, true. But spending a small amount to look is best justified by having an idea what to look for.

There was the signal sent to M13 in the 1970's I believe, though globulars seem like an unlikely spot for life for various reasons, so getting an answer is pretty remote and would take thousands of years at the speed of light anyway.
