Chi Cyg and U Sge 0300 6.25.22 UTC

Post by pakarinen »

Got a set of finder rings and a rail for my 50mm, so I thought I'd try it on my Zero mount last night. Transparency was bad - probably under smoke again, but I was able to find Chi Cygni. I had tried to find Chi the night before with my 80mm, but wasn't sure about the field. Last night I'm sure I was in the right place, having hopped over from 17 Cyg.

Anyway, Chi varies from about mag 4.2 to down to about mag 13 visually over about a 430 day period. I saw a note it hit max in April, so I expected it to be on the way down and it was indeed relatively faint. AAVSO lightcurve showed it at 8th magnitude, so that seemed about right under these conditions.
Next I hopped from the Coathanger to U Sge, but no joy. Definitely not in eclipse. :Boo:

I want to check Chi with my 80mm now that I know the field, but it's raining today, so it'll be a bit before I can revisit it.

Fine report Olen - thanks for submitting it and a great catch of Chi Cygni! Don't see too many variable star reports - congrats on winning the VROD of the day!

Hi Olen. A very nice report on variable star Chi Cygni. You can follow the AAVSO charts, but you have to relate the apparent brightness to other stars and then recalculate the surrounding star magnitudes to your immediate seeing conditions and this gets tricky without an astronomical photometer. But you did come away with an observation. Thanks for your report Olen and congratulations on receiving the TSS VROD Award today.

And it looks like Chi is almost at max again. Latest AAVSO reported mag for Chi is +5.7. Looked pretty comparable to 17 Cyg this morning which is listed as mag +5.0. Problem is, 17 Cyg is a variable also.
