New reflex finder from ES

Interesting new product from ES. A hybrid between telrad and red dot.

https://agenaastro.com/explore-scientif ... 0included).

I have not tried it, but just looking at the photos there are some nice design features like large alignment knobs which face observer, Vixen/Synta style base which should fit many scope brands, built in dew cover.

Interesting. Makes me wonder if the design patent on the original TelRad has expired. They sure do seem awfully similar.
I like the mounting solution though. I never was a big fan of having to tape that TelRad base to my scope tubes.

Huh, that's nifty. It's sleeker than a Telrad. :)

Looking at it once again, makes me wonder why the original TelRad was so incredibly large. I realize the original model contained a 9v battery which took up a bit of space but there was an awful lot of empty, dead space inside that thing.
The optical cover on this new model is a bit interesting. I'm wondering if that is going to be an issue when the scope is in certain positions, flopping down into the fov?

The length is useful when aligning the Telrad not using a base. It works remarkably well, just plunk it on the tube, clamp it down with an old piece of inner tube and it is aligned for any scope that has the optical axis parallel to the mechanical.

I was there for the fielding and testing (1972/73) of the first prototype of the Telrad with inventor Steve Kufeld (he was a member of the LAAS, as was I). That size box was used because it was the most convenient size from RadioShack that Steve could find. Additionally, he reasoned that this slightly larger box would be easier to mount on to an OTA and get the finder's mechanical axis reasonably parallel with the optical axis of the OTA.

Interesting JT, Wow, I had no idea it had been around since the early-mid 70's. That's incredible that you were there for its beginning.
