Eyepiece pricing

#1

Post by Lady Fraktor »

I understand that pricing of collector level eyepieces can be quite arbitrary at times but to price one at 2x the current high end price?
I have seen a few TMB SuperMono eyepieces advertised at € 800-1,000 as well.

Original Carl Zeiss 2x barlows sell for € 1,200+ with the same for the TMB 1,8x barlow. A ZAO-II 34mm is € 2,400+ depending on condition...

Its Ebay. Fair market value is not really much of a consideration there for a lot of sellers. For many it is simply about doing a money grab. Unfortunately many buyers don't research adequately and some hate to lose so much and get caught up in the bidding war. Its not that unusual to see used items sell higher than what one could buy a new one with proper research. As the old saying goes, "there's a sucker born every minute." :)

The price jumps are not just confined to the bay of evil though, even Astromart which is usually a good indicator for pricing has jumped from € 4.500 to € 6.000 in the last 2 years.
A lot of hard to find eyepieces are going up by about 2/3 normal.
Even some like the Zeiss and Leica Plossl/ ortho that JG discusses are starting to go up as well.

True Gabrielle. AM and CN are both good indicators of normal fair market value as a rule - usually. However, valuation of used equipment can be a bit vague at times. I've seen stuff on those two sites obviously over priced, presumably in hopes of making a cash score rather than any sense of value reality. Of course, as is always the case, buyer beware and buyer be smart.
